

2008 Dave Nelsen Scholarship Winners
10th Annual Awards

Michael Cullinan – Webster MA, - Michael currently attends New England Technology, Warwick RI. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Iraq. He believes that whether he works in a commercial or residential environment, oil heating and energy conservation will be the biggest economic impact this country will ever experience. He would love to be part of this change. Michael works full-time while attending New England Tech full-time. Michael was presented with the Jack Sullivan Award sponsored by Taco.
Anthony Alfano – Greenwood Lake, NY – Anthony will be attending Lincoln Tech, Mawah, NJ. He is working two jobs so that he can attend school. He is a marina boat mechanic and bartender. Both of these jobs have taught him the importance of service. He is also a volunteer firefighter.
Dana Borriello – Hampstead, NH – Dana will be attending the New Hampshire, Community College of Technology, Manchester NH. He began his HVAC-R learning at the Pinkerton Academy where he learned the basic skills and fundamentals. He plans to get his degree and then work in either the residential or commercial field. He strongly believes in education, thus he plans to pursue certifications within the heating industry.
Brandon Darrah – Coudersport, PA – Brandon is a senior at PA College of Technology. His interest in HVAC was learned at an early age by accompanying his dad on a service call. He attends Susquehanna Valley Chapter meetings with his oil heating instructor and attends the ACCA National conferences. He enjoys the value of networking with peers and he looks forward to designing efficient heating and AC systems for his future customers. Brandon won the Delevan Award.
Michael Gadbois – Salem, CT – Michael attends New England Institute of Technology, too. He won the Honeywell Award. His essay indicates that he has a clear direction in life that includes the eventual starting of a new heating company. Michael has a 3.7 average and has been nominated for tech scholar and he has been asked by his instructor to help tutor in the heating lab.
Matthew Latimer – Red Lion, PA – Matthew currently attends York Technical Institute, York, PA and works for an oil dealer in the area. Matthew lives in a rural area where many oil furnaces used. He appreciates the combination of working directly for a dealer and also attending school. He said that in school they work mainly with the “alternative” fired burners where as working with an oil dealer he has a chance to learn more about oil. Matthew’s goal is to have the skills that allow him to support his family.
Gregory Miller – Easton, PA – Gregory attends the Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School and upon graduation will be attending PA College of Technology, Williamsport, PA. While in high school, Greg participated in Skills USA as a 10th grader and attended the Leadership Development Training at Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos. Greg is a saxophone player in his high school band, Freedom High School and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.64. He has earned straight A’s at vo-tech. He also works part-time at a grocery store.
Joshua Saeler – Fenelton, PA – Joshua too will be heading to PA College of Technology after graduating from Butler County Vocational Technical School. He got his taste of the HVAC business too by accompanying his dad as a helper.
Adam Sproul – Bangor, ME – Adam is an “outsider” who learned what he wanted to do at a very young age. Both of his parents were police officers for more than 27 years. He became interested in the Oilheating industry because of a technician that visited their home on a no-heat call. The technician got the boiler running and then came upstairs and explained to his parents what the problem was. Adam at that moment knew that he wanted to be able to do this very same thing. Adam too has participated in Skills USA and took 3rd place in the state. After graduation from United Technologies Center he will attend Southern Maine Community College, South Portland, ME.
